A MEAL TO REMEMBER

As they were eating, Jesus took a loaf of bread and asked God's blessing on it. Then he broke it in pieces and gave it to the disciples, saying, "Take it and eat it, for this is my body."  And he took a cup of wine and gave thanks to God for it. He gave it to them and said, "Each of you drink from it, for this is my blood, which seals the covenant between God and his people. It is poured out to forgive the sins of many.  Mark my words—I will not drink wine again until the day I drink it new with you in my Father's Kingdom."  Then they sang a hymn and went out to the Mount of Olives . – Matthew 26:26-30 (NLT)

It is that time of year – the annual celebration of Passover. What an exciting time for the people of Israel . Jesus’ disciples are ready to rejoice, to commemorate and acknowledge God’s deliverance of the Jewish nation as they have done every year for as long as they can remember. But this year is different. Jesus shows His beloved friends that the purpose of this day has changed. The bread that they will eat is now representative of His body offered on the table of sacrifice. The wine corresponds to the blood Jesus will shed on behalf of the world. The meal that they share is now a time to focus on what Jesus will do. For us, it is a time to center on what has already taken place. For all, it is a time to look forward to the day when Jesus shares in the meal with us anew in the coming kingdom. It is time to partake, to sing, to celebrate, and to remember.

PRAYER THOUGHT: Lord, I will never forget what you have done. I partake of this feast in Your honor.
