CHOSEN
SON After
his baptism, as Jesus came up out of the water, the heavens were opened
and he saw the Spirit of God descending like a dove and settling on him.
And a voice from heaven said, "This is my beloved Son, and I
am fully pleased with him." – Matthew 3:16-17 (NLT)
Jesus had spent eternity past with the other members of the
Trinity – the Father and Holy Spirit. After 30 plus years of life on
earth Jesus was ready to begin the earthly ministry He had come to
planet earth for. His baptism signified the start of that ministry and
was marked by the presence of all three members of the godhead. The Son
came out of the baptismal waters ready for action, the Spirit descended
upon Him preparing Jesus for mission, and the Father spoke the words of
comfort and calling. It was time for kingdom work to commence.
In our lives as Disciples of Christ we begin our journey toward
ministry in much the same way. We are inaugurated in the baptismal
waters to a life of service to God. The Holy Spirit empowers us for the
task at hand, the Father blesses us and sends us out into the world to
serve, and the Son serves as our example as well as our companion as we
work toward kingdom goals. Chosen and commissioned, those are the words
to describe all who follow in Christ’s steps. PRAYER
THOUGHT:
Lord, I accept your call and will follow your example as I serve your
cause. |
