THE COST OF
UNITY Be humble and gentle. Be patient with each other, making allowance for
each other's faults because of your love. Always keep yourselves united
in the Holy Spirit, and bind yourselves together with peace.
– Ephesians 4:2-3 (NLT)
One of the greatest tragedies today is the division that is seen
by warring camps within Christendom. Rather than seeking unity in the
Person of Jesus Christ the focus seems to be on differences even when
the places where we diverge are peripheral at best. We are never called
to compromise the fundamentals of our faith but we are called to be
joined together as one body under the Lordship of Jesus Christ.
Christ calls us as churches and as individuals to be united in
the Holy Spirit. But rather than calling for a council or a new and
improved strategy we are directed instead to be “humble, gentle” and
“patient” with each other. Our love should stand as a means of
overlooking the weaknesses we find in our brothers and sisters in
Christ. True biblical love, a love that seeks understanding and strives
for peace, is what is necessary if we are to experience the unity of
faith in its most acceptable form. When we are truly following the lead
of the Spirit we will accept His drawing of us together as one. PRAYER THOUGHT: Lord, I seek to be
an integral part of building your church rather than dividing it. |
